A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap, made of porcelain, ceramic, or other material, placed over a tooth to restore strength, shape, size, and appearance. When your dental crown in Pasadena is cemented into place, it fully encases the entire visible portion of the tooth, at and above the gumline, to protect and strengthen the structure of a tooth that cannot be restored with a filling or other restoration method.

Serving Pasadena and the surrounding area, Niloufar Molayem, D.D.S., practices general and cosmetic dentistry in Pasadena, with dental services geared toward conservative, holistic treatment. Using biocompatible materials that will not cause a reaction in the patient, she employs a natural, “mimicking” technique designed to emulate the patient’s natural anatomy, employing the least aggressive methods possible while ensuring the well-being of the whole patient. For some of the most natural-looking results, visit Pasadena Smile Center today!

Chewing can be improved when a tooth is reshaped with a crown to more efficiently match opposing teeth. Porcelain crowns or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of the teeth for a natural, aesthetically pleasing appearance. Modern ceramic processes produce color and translucency more natural looking now than ever before.

Why Your Dentist May Recommend a Crown

Dr. Molayem may recommend tooth restoration with a crown for of a number of reasons, both structural and cosmetic. She may place a crown to:

  • Restore a cracked or fractured tooth
  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Replace a large filling
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover a tooth with a root canal
  • Attach a bridge
  • Cover a tooth that is discolored or poorly shaped
  • Improve the appearance of your smile

Crown Placement Procedure

A crown placement procedure usually requires two appointments. Before the crown can be created in the dental laboratory, the tooth must be reduced in size so the cap (crown) can fit over it properly.

In your first appointment, while the tooth is numb, Dr. Molayem will prepare it by removing decay and shaping the surface of the tooth to properly fit a crown. Then, she will take several accurate impressions to provide an exact mold for the crown, and to create temporary crown that will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until the new crown has been fabricated in the dental lab. At this time, she will also carefully match the exact shade of your porcelain crown to your existing teeth.

Using the impression made by Dr. Molayem, the dental laboratory will make your crown according to her specifications. When the new crown is ready, you have your second appointment, at which time the temporary crown is removed, the tooth is cleaned, and the new crown is cemented in place. Dr. Molayem places the crown carefully, to ensure accurate spacing and a comfortable, correct bite.
